Robert Brown has been training with the American school of Martial Arts West Palmdale (ASMA-West Palmdale) for 10+ years. Robert is attending California State University Long Beach in his pursuit of obtaining his B.S in Electrical Engineering. He enjoys his complex studies in both engineering and Martial Arts. His passion for science and martial arts keeps him focused and disciplined. These qualities are what made Robert a 4th degree black belt which makes him a Master in the style of Suh Do Kwan, the way of Master Suh. Robert studied under Grandmaster Don Baird, former Owner of ASMA,  in the style making him a well versed Martial Artist in the Kungfu system and Tai Chi Arts. Which makes him a great instructor for the martial arts school. Robert is patient and aware of skill differences and limitations of his students during his instruction and his main goal is mastering himself, and what a better way of mastering oneself but to help other master themselves through the methodical and strength building art of Tai Chi. In his spare time Robert enjoys reading science articles and taking long walks in the park.

I started my martial arts training at the age of 13, in Kenpo Karate under Steve Sanders, (Steve Muhammad) one of the founders of (BKF) The Black Karate Federation. It was at this very school where the opening scene of Entered The, Dragon was, filmed. I have also studied other disciplines under a variety of distinguished teachers.  In 2009, I began my training in Suh Do Kwan at the American Martial Arts School Inc. under Grandmaster Don Baird.

My journey into martial arts was not the typical path. When I became the guardian of my nephew for a time, I wanted to make sure that he would be able to get out and exercise, not just be stuck on video games. I found the American School of Martial arts and enrolled my nephew in a class along with several other sports. I saw the class building up his confidence and coordination. One of the parents suggested I join the adult class.   When my nephew was able to go back home, I asked to switch over the account so I could take classes. I had never taken martial arts in my youth but if I had, I may not have found this place.  I feel very lucky to have found a true martial art that includes techniques, hapkido, forms, tai chi, and chi kung. My journey may not have been typical, but it means anyone can do martial arts if they commit themselves to it. There’s a great saying “A black belt is a white belt that doesn’t quit” and I believe that to be my journey. It wasn’t always easy or comfortable but as our motto says, “Train only to master yourself”.  I look forward to seeing you on that same journey.
